the price of corn

In a previous post here, it was noted that - thanks to our energy addiction and the alternatives we are seeking - the price of corn has increased significantly. As with the increased prices for energy we seek to tax Vermont Yankee for… so too why not corn? After all, fair is fair. But just how much has the price of corn increased? Well, based on commodity prices, the average price for a bushel of corn last year was about $2.11. (Also, see here.) The current futures price is around $3.86 a bushel. That’s an 83% increase. Always nice to put things in perspective.

The average yield per acre for corn is about 100 bushels, with a good yield going as high as 160 bushels or more.
