critical thinking, taxes
The word “experiment” suggests the realm of “science”, a discipline of which many people are highly suspicious. Actually “science” is simply a method of “thinking” - which now that I think about it - is also something of which many people are highly suspicious… but I digress again.
“Thought Experimentation” is a well recognized discipline. It is a powerful tool that is under developed - in my opinion. Here’s an example from my recent musings:
How high can you count using the fingers on one hand? The simple (easy) answer is five? (unless of course …) If you repeat the count and “keep track” there is no limit to how high you can count - but the point is missed. You have to indicate the number counted using the fingers of one hand. So how high can you count using the fingers on one hand? How high can you count using the fingers on both hands? You don’t have to be a math whiz to “experiment” with this thought.
