the weblog awards

The “voting” for the 2007 weblog awards is currently underway. Here’s a great opportunity to refresh your blog reader list with some new “stuff”.

The awards are broken down into categories making it easy to see who the current nominees are; so go to each category of interest and find some fresh reading! Presumably the nominations have narrowed down some of the best sites – so they are worth taking a look at!”

Under “Best Conservative Blog” we have Michelle Mankin – who gets my vote. She’s also leading the overall “Best Blog” category ahead of the “Huffington Post”! (at least at the time of this posting.)

Under the category “Best Science Blog”, Pharyngula (PZ Myers) is leading by a hair over “Bad Astronomy Blog” - but neither are really about science! Pharyngula which I had been reading for awhile, is more or less an atheist / Darwinist rant blog which I think got a big start from Richard Dawkins book (and website) a la “The God Delusion”. It (Pharyngula) still occasionally has some good stuff on that topic – but little real science. My main complaint with Pharyngula is that there are way too many posts, most of minor interest. I think the extensive commenting makes it more of a “social” website than anything else. PZ Myers must be making a fortune off the number of daily hits! But honestly, I’ve lost interest and may drop that blog from my reader. I prefer quality, not quantity. In the science category, my vote goes to Climate Audit. It’s running a not too distant third. This is a real science log IMHO because Steve McIntyre deals with scientific data. Many would categorize his site as a “global warming denier” because – obviously – the focus is on climate. Not true. What Steve is attempting to do is look real hard at the numbers and data behind the “global surface temperature warming” data that forms the basis for the IPCC reports. And indeed, there is no hiding a climate warming trend in the data Steve works with - that is the data the the “real” climate scientists are willing to share with the public. What’s not so readily apparent to Steve and most other people who care to look long and hard at the “data”, is whether – and to what extent – this warming trend can be attributed to the activities of man and his carbon emissions. And – the best part – if you’re game, you can actually follow along and “do” the science.

Give Climate Audit a vote.

For “Best Vermont Blog”, give a vote to Vermont Tiger!
